The IOW Community Club has had a very successful outdoor bowls section since 1973, known as 'Plessey Bowls Club', which has become the largest, and one of the premier outdoor clubs on the Isle of Wight.
It was decided to enhance the facilities of the Community Club by adding an indoor bowls hall, housing four full size rinks This indoor bowls facility building was completed in September 1997 at a cost of £330K, which was funded by a £229K lottery grant from Sport England and a £101k loan from sixteen club members. The indoor section is run fully independently of the Main Club by its own committee.
The green has four 38m rinks laid by Dales Bowls Floors with a Greenweave carpet.
The first league match was played at the beginning of October 1997 and the official opening by Tony Allcock took place on 15th October 1997.
The indoor bowls club has a full membership of approximately 250, with a further 50 playing on a casual basis. Members can play in leagues and friendly matches against other clubs.
The club welcomes new bowlers, beginners or experienced. Casual sessions are available with equipment provided free of charge if required. Tuition is also available to new bowlers if required.
